MY INTERVIEW OF THE SHIPPING DEPUTY MINISTER TO THE PRESIDENT
I was deeply honored to be requested by the Cyprus Marine Club to carry out a face-to-face interview on the 29th of September, in front of a live audience, of the newly appointed Shipping Deputy Minister to the President Mr. Vassiliοs Demetriades.
It was great to see many Club Members and friends who joined us at the Marina Beach Bar - with pandemic protocols in place - and were looking forward to engaging with the Shipping Deputy Minister.
Born close to the sea, in Limassol, Mr. Demetriades was always intrigued by ships during his childhood and eventually got involved in Maritime Affairs.
The interview was performed in an informal but strictly professional manner so that not only the professional attributes of Mr. Demetriades were highlighted but also his personal ones too.
In answering my questions, he shared his previous roles in the Cyprus Maritime Administration and with the European Commission in Brussels, that hold for a long time prior becoming Deputy Minister a few months ago.
Further, Mr. Demetriades shared his vision and objectives in office such as the formulation of a long-term strategy for Cyprus shipping, digitalization, the green transformation of the sector, and various projects he has in mind to further enhance maritime education in Cyprus.
We discussed his plans to reach out to the young generation and subsequently, enable women to join the Shipping sector.
Among many interesting, challenging, and crucial topics, Mr. Demetriades shared his thoughts on the deepening crew changes crisis, a humanitarian emergency that is affecting people and families all over the world.
The interview was a memorable experience for me, and I definitely learned a lot from the Shipping Deputy Minister. Our discussion was inspirational and thought-provoking. It has also shed light on the person of the Shipping Deputy Minister, an empathetic and dedicated maritime expert.
I personally admire his love for running and his determination to stay fit and healthy. He is passionate about starting a small group of runners in Limassol and we instantly received positive responses from the audience.
It was an honour to welcome Mr. Demetriades at Cyprus Marine Club. He expressed his willingness to come back for more interactive discussions with the Club Members and friends.
